What to expect
Roque Nublo is a rock tower on a plateau above the Tejeda caldera; the top of the rock is at 1813 m. From the Degollada de la Goleta saddle a stony path climbs gently, getting steeper near the end. Up top you walk round the base of the rock and look down into the caldera, across to Roque Bentayga and, when it's clear, over the sea to Teide on Tenerife.
How to do it
The car park at the trailhead is closed to private cars. Leave yours at the Cruz de los Llanos car park or in Tejeda and ride Global bus line 18, which stops at Roque Nublo. Between 9:00 and 17:00 you need a booking for a specific day and hour at reservasroquenublo.com; the QR code is checked at the entrance. The limit is 60 people per hour, so book a few days ahead.
When to go
Morning, while the air is clear and there are fewer people at the top. Outside 9–17 you don't need a booking, but the trailhead car park is still closed. When the app shows a sea of clouds, you're usually above it up here – grey below, sun on top. If it's very windy, pick another day.
Watch out
It's much cooler than on the coast and often windy. Bring a jacket, water and sturdy shoes; the path is rocky. Keep away from the edges of the plateau – the drops aren't fenced. If there's a wind or storm warning, don't go.
