How strong is the sun in the Canary Islands?
UV radiation in the Canary Islands is strong all year round. In summer the UV index commonly reaches 11 or more, which is the extreme level, and you can get sunburnt even in winter or under cloud.
Why the sun is so strong
The islands lie close to the Tropic of Cancer, the sun stands high in the sky here and the air is usually clean. In winter the UV index around midday is in the moderate range; from spring to autumn it is very high to extreme.
What the UV index means
According to the World Health Organization: 1–2 low, 3–5 moderate, 6–7 high, 8–10 very high, 11 and above extreme. Protection is recommended from a value of 3 upwards.
When to take care
Wind and the cooler sea are deceptive – the sun does not feel hot, and yet you burn. Neither thin cloud nor calima reliably stops UV radiation. In the mountains the radiation is even stronger: on Teide or Roque de los Muchachos, protect yourself even in winter.
How to protect yourself
Around midday, find shade; use a high-factor sun cream and reapply it after swimming; wear a hat and sunglasses. Small children should not be in direct sun. IslaBu shows the day's highest UV index and the hours when it is better to be in the shade.
